Alex Nail's photography was first featured in Issue 21. At the time most of his images were made close to home and fitted in around his day job. Even then, with the exception of a few favourite places, he was keen to avoid repeating established compositions and find new ones instead. He talked about pushing himself harder, and wanting to camp.

Alex Nail is a landscape photographer with a love of multi-day backpacking in mountainous areas. He is best known for his work in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland, Iceland and the Drakensberg Escarpment of South Africa. He runs adventurous photography workshops usually involving camping in remote locations. He is a qualified Mountain Leader.

The Great Wilderness by Alex Nail. A photographic book of Fisherfield in the Highlands of Scotland. "The Great Wilderness" is a luxury hardback photography book of Scotland's most remote mountain area. It shows the Highlands during ephemeral moments of light, weather, and seasonal change. The images were captured over a 4-year period.

Another photographer that seems to be mastering this art is Alex Nail. His previous title, Northwest, was fantastic. It turned out to be one of my favourite landscape photography books. When Alex announced pre-orders for his latest book, The Great Wilderness, I couldn't give him my money fast enough. Alex had been hinting at the design.
